Position Summary

The Gardener is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the appearance of government-owned grounds at the NASA Langley Research Center. This role performs a variety of landscaping and grounds maintenance tasks including mowing, trimming, pruning, planting, fertilizing, and supporting seasonal and storm-related cleanup. The position requires physical stamina, safe equipment operation, and the ability to work in diverse weather conditions.


Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain grounds maintenance equipment such as lawn mowers, trimmers/edgers, leaf blowers, and small hand tools

  • Perform mowing, trimming, pruning, planting, mulching, and general landscaping tasks

  • Apply fertilizers and pesticides as directed (certified pest controller or registered technician experience preferred)

  • Maintain cleanliness, safety, and functionality of assigned equipment

  • Assist with storm cleanup and seasonal grounds maintenance needs

  • Stand, walk, lift, and carry heavy materials as part of daily work activities

  • Follow all safety procedures, regulations, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements

  • Maintain accurate basic records and support work order documentation

  • Interact professionally and courteously with the public and team members

  • Work independently or as part of a team to meet project and schedule requirements

  • Perform other related duties as assigned


Qualifications & Experience

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Previous experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or a related field preferred

  • Ability to operate and maintain grounds maintenance tools and equipment

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Physical ability to lift and move heavy objects (up to 40 lbs.)

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods

  • Basic record-keeping and organizational skills

Preferred:

  • Certified pest controller or registered technician experience


Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work performed outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Requires bending, lifting, carrying, standing, and walking for extended periods

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.

  • Work may occur in parks, public buildings, and government-owned properties

  • Must be able to meet NASA Langley Research Center access requirements


Schedule

  • Full-time position (40 hours/week), typically Monday–Friday

  • Overtime may occur before/after shifts or on weekends based on weather and operational needs

  • Travel during the workday is primarily local; occasional out-of-area or overnight travel may occur
