Summary
Grounds Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintaining and improving the appearance of government-owned grounds, including parks, public buildings, and other properties. This involves performing a range of tasks, such as mowing lawns, trimming hedges, pruning trees, planting flowers, and applying fertilizers and pesticides.
Essential Functions
- Maintain the appearance of government-owned grounds by performing tasks such as mowing lawns, trimming hedges, pruning trees, planting flowers, and removing weeds.
- Operate and maintain a variety of grounds maintenance equipment such as lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and other power tools.
- Perform routine maintenance and repair of equipment and tools as needed.
- Perform inspections of government-owned grounds to identify and address safety hazards, such as fallen branches, damaged equipment, or uneven terrain.
- Apply fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides as needed, in accordance with safety guidelines and regulations.
- Monitor the health of trees, plants, and other vegetation, and take appropriate action to address issues such as disease, infestation, or nutrient deficiencies.
- Collaborate with other members of the grounds maintenance team to ensure that work is completed efficiently and effectively.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, equipment used, and materials used, as well as any issues or concerns that arise.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and members of the public regarding grounds maintenance activities and issues.

- Knowledge of grounds maintenance equipment and tools.
- Ability to operate and maintain grounds maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations related to grounds maintenance work.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic record-keeping and organizational skills.
- Good physical condition and able to lift and move heavy objects.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to work with the public in a professional and courteous manner.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or related field preferred.
- Valid driver's license.
Work Environment:
- Work is primarily performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
- Work may be performed in a variety of settings, including parks, public buildings, and other government-owned properties.
- Work may be performed during normal business hours, as well as on weekends and holidays, as needed.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 pounds).
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods of time.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment and tools.
