SUMMARY

 

The Gardener is responsible for maintaining and improving the appearance of government-owned grounds, including parks, public buildings, and other properties. This involves performing a range of tasks, such as mowing lawns, trimming hedges, pruning trees, planting flowers, and applying fertilizers and pesticides.

 

We are looking for additional people to join our team in maintaining and improving the appearance of the NASA Langley Research Center grounds.  This is a full-time position and typically operates Monday through Friday.  Adjustments to the schedule to include extended shifts and weekend work may be necessary depending on weather.   

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Ability to operate and maintain grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations related to grounds maintenance work.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic record-keeping and organizational skills.
  • Good physical condition and able to lift and move heavy objects.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work with the public in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Familiar with basic grounds maintenance tasks such as operating lawn mowers, trimming/edging, pruning shrubs, and operating leaf blowers.
  • Comfortable using basic hand tools.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
  • Assists with storm clean up.
  • Can stand and walk for extended periods of time.

 

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires driver’s license.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic record-keeping and organizational skills.
  • Good physical condition and able to lift and move heavy objects.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work with the public in a professional and courteous manner
  • Certified pest controller or registered technician experience desired.

 

Experience

  • Previous experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or related field preferred.



Education

High school diploma or Equivalent required.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

 

This position has no supervisory.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The location is NASA Langley Research Center. Successful applicants will need to be able to gain access to the center.
  • Work is primarily performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Work may be performed in a variety of settings, including parks, public buildings, and other government-owned properties.
  • Work may be performed during normal business hours, as well as on weekends and holidays, as needed.

ROLE/LOCATION SPECIFIC ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

This is a full-time position.

 

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time position (40 hrs./week). Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, with overtime as needed before/after shifts and on Weekends.  

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Regular commute to primary work location is not considered travel.

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
