SUMMARY
The Integrative Medicine Nurse RN plays a vital role in delivering holistic, patient-centered care within the National Capital Region Pain Initiative (NCRPI) at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). This role focuses on managing and educating patients suffering from acute and chronic pain, utilizing a combination of traditional nursing practices and alternative medicine techniques. The nurse collaborates with physicians and other healthcare staff to implement integrative treatment plans, promote self-care, and support patients and their families in adopting lifestyle changes that enhance healing and well-being.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Patient Education and Self-Care: Teach patients and their families effective self-care techniques to promote healing and improve long-term outcomes. Motivate patients to adhere to treatment plans and continue their self-care regimen outside the clinical setting.
- Clinical Support and Collaboration: Provide support to other healthcare providers, including government employees, medical students, and resident physicians, during clinical procedures. Assist with administrative duties, including maintaining statistical records, documenting clinical workload, and contributing to clinical staff quality assurance functions.
- Clinical Care and Treatment: Deliver direct hands-on patient care for up to 80% of the time, including executing treatment recommendations from Pain and Integrative Medicine physicians. The nurse will carry out procedures such as alternative pain management methods while maintaining the highest standards of care.
- Quality Assurance and Improvement: Participate in Performance Improvement (PI) and Risk Management (RM) programs, reviewing and evaluating patient care, identifying areas for improvement, and recommending corrective actions when necessary.
- Command Orientation and Training: Attend and complete initial and annual command-directed training requirements, including fire safety, infection control, disaster preparedness, family advocacy, and customer relations.
- Administrative and Educational Duties: Manage patient records, assist in training programs for hospital staff and patients regarding alternative medicine, and provide administrative support as required by supervisors. Prepare educational materials, maintain logs, and participate in meetings and orientations.
- Flexibility and Adaptability: Demonstrate flexibility in learning new integrative medicine techniques, attending training sessions such as the Annual Pain Care Skills Training (three days), and occasionally working outside normal business hours to meet program needs.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong knowledge of both traditional nursing practices and alternative medicine techniques.
- Exemplary customer service and communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
- Ability to motivate patients and family members to continue self-care and adhere to treatment plans.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (RN) from an accredited National League of Nursing (NLN)-approved program.
- Two years of experience in pain management or a related field, or training in at least two alternative modalities for pain management (e.g., yoga, Tai Chi, meditation, touch therapy).
- Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and CPR.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
May supervise other staff, including hospital corpsmen and medical technicians, during clinical procedures and ensure adherence to clinical standards.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The nurse will work at WRNMMC, primarily within the Pain Clinic, providing patient care, education, and support for integrative medicine practices.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to stand for extended periods and perform clinical procedures.
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
Full-time, Monday-Friday, 0600-1700. Occasional after-hours work may be required for training or program-related events.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Occasional travel for the Annual Pain Care Skills Training, which may take place outside the National Capital Region (NCR), for at least three days.
CLEARANCE/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Must have a valid, unrestricted RN license from a U.S. state, territory, or commonwealth. BLS, ACLS, and CPR certifications are required.
