Location:                 Bethesda, MD

Salary:                     $140,000 - $160,000/Yr.

 

SUMMARY

 

The Integrative Medicine Physician provides comprehensive, specialized pain management care at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), utilizing both conventional and alternative therapies. This role integrates approaches such as acupuncture, mindfulness, and biofeedback to treat patients with acute and chronic pain. The physician participates in multidisciplinary care teams, leads educational sessions for medical staff and students, and offers personalized, holistic care that addresses the physical, emotional, and psychological aspects of pain. This position supports the broader mission of the National Capital Region Pain Initiative (NCRPI), promoting Better Care, Better Health, Lower Cost, and Increased Soldier Readiness.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Clinical Consultations and Treatment: Conduct patient consultations, diagnosing and treating pain using integrative medicine techniques, such as acupuncture, biofeedback, mindfulness, and other alternative therapies. Prescribe traditional medications and complementary therapies, ensuring a balanced, holistic approach to pain management
  • Patient Education and Care Plans: Educate patients on integrative pain management techniques and create individualized treatment plans that incorporate both conventional and alternative modalities. Ensure continuity of care by closely monitoring treatment efficacy and making necessary adjustments
  • Collaboration and Case Management: Work collaboratively with other healthcare providers, including pain specialists and the broader interdisciplinary team, to develop and implement patient-centered, multi-disciplinary pain management plans. Regularly participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss and evaluate patient care strategies
  • Administrative and Educational Duties: Maintain accurate, timely patient records in accordance with Joint Commission (JC) standards. Provide training and mentorship to residents, medical students, and healthcare professionals, offering educational sessions on integrative treatments. Lead lectures and workshops, including the Integrative/Acupuncture Webinar, and participate in the Annual Pain Care Skills Training
  • Research and Development: Support the ongoing development of pain care practices by participating in quality improvement initiatives and contributing to research and educational activities related to integrative medicine.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Expertise in Integrative Medicine: Advanced knowledge of integrative therapies, including acupuncture, biofeedback, mindfulness, and other alternative medicine approaches. Proficiency in providing consultations and treatments that combine conventional and complementary techniques.
  • Strong Communication and Educational Skills: The ability to communicate complex medical concepts clearly to both medical staff and patients. Strong educational and mentorship skills to lead training sessions and teach integrative medicine techniques to healthcare professionals and students.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

 

  • Doctorate in Medicine (M.D. or D.O.) from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of an accredited residency program and board certification in pain medicine or integrative medicine.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in the application of integrative medicine approaches such as acupuncture, biofeedback, and complementary therapies.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

 

Oversight of pharmacy technicians and of inventory control.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

 

Travel required for NCRPI Annual Pain Care Skills Training (up to three days annually).

 

CLEARANCE/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state.
  • DEA registration.
