SUMMARY

 

The Tele-Pain Nurse RN provides specialized care using tele-health technology to support pain management services at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) and other National Capital Region (NCR) healthcare facilities. This role focuses on conducting remote patient assessments, educating patients on self-care, and facilitating the deployment and recovery of tele-health equipment. The nurse collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality pain management care to patients who may be unable to access in-person services. As part of the National Capital Region Pain Initiative (NCRPI), the Tele-Pain Nurse ensures continuity of care, resolves technical issues, and supports patients in their ongoing treatment through virtual means.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Tele-Health Monitoring and Support: Monitor and chart daily tele-health readings, addressing any issues that arise, and coordinating follow-up with appropriate medical staff. Facilitate the deployment, recovery, and tracking of tele-health equipment for patients.
  • Patient Assessment and Education: Conduct comprehensive telephonic assessments of patients, providing medication education and psychosocial support. Ensure patients understand their care plans, medications, and any required follow-up actions.
  • Care Coordination: Collaborate with case managers and other healthcare professionals to develop and manage comprehensive care plans for patients using tele-health services. Track patient referrals and follow up on any outstanding needs.
  • Documentation and Compliance: Maintain accurate records of telephonic interactions, patient assessments, and equipment usage. Ensure all activities adhere to clinical protocols, guidelines, and accepted tele-health best practices.
  • Patient and Field Support: Assist patients with the installation and use of tele-health equipment. Provide technical support and education to both patients and field staff, ensuring proper use of all tele-health peripherals.
  • Quality Improvement and Record Review: Participate in quality record reviews and performance improvement initiatives to continually enhance the delivery of tele-health services.
  • Communication and Problem Solving: Demonstrate excellent communication skills, addressing patient concerns, solving problems creatively, and ensuring that all issues are resolved promptly and efficiently.
  • Training and Program Support: Serve as an instructor for the Annual Pain Care Skills Training, which may involve travel and participation outside the NCR for up to three days. Additionally, provide guidance on tele-health best practices to other healthcare providers as needed.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Expertise in Tele-Health and Pain Management: Extensive experience in using tele-health technology for pain management, along with a strong understanding of both chronic and acute pain management protocols.
  • Communication and Customer Service: Exemplary communication and customer service skills to interact effectively with patients, family members, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Technical Proficiency: Ability to use tele-health platforms, troubleshoot technical issues, and train patients and staff on the proper use of tele-health equipment.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (RN) from a National League of Nursing (NLN)-approved program.
  • Three years of experience in pain management or a related field, with at least one year of tele-health experience.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

There are no supervisory responsibilities associated with this position.  

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

The Tele-Pain Nurse RN primarily works remotely, conducting tele-health sessions, but may also work within the WRNMMC Pain Clinic as needed for training and meetings.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

This role involves using tele-health technology, requiring proficiency with computers and the ability to troubleshoot equipment remotely.

 

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

 

​Full-time, Monday-Friday, 0600-1700. Occasional after-hours work may be required for training or program-related events.

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

 

Occasional travel for Annual Pain Care Skills Training, which may involve traveling outside the NCR for up to three days.

 

CLEARANCE/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

 

Must possess a valid, unrestricted RN license in any U.S. state. BLS, ACLS, and CPR certifications are required
