SUMMARY
The Senior Subject Matter Expert (SME) leads human-centered design (HCD) initiatives and provides specialized expertise in technical assistance, supporting various projects within their functional domain. This role involves conducting user research, developing personas, creating journey maps, and facilitating design workshops. As a key contributor, the Senior SME ensures that HCD principles are integrated into grant management and project activities, enhancing user experience and project outcomes. In the absence of a Project Manager, the Senior SME may take on additional responsibilities in managing HCD project components. The role also involves consulting with teams, providing expert advice, and developing technical solutions to complex problems. This position requires substantial experience and knowledge in HCD and relevant industry practices.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- HCD Leadership and Integration: Lead human-centered design activities, including conducting user research, developing personas, and mapping user journeys. Ensure that HCD principles are effectively integrated into grant management and other project initiatives to improve user experience and engagement.
- Design and Facilitation: Develop and present design artifacts, including personas, journey maps, and prototypes. Facilitate ideation and design workshops to engage stakeholders, gather insights, and foster innovation. Provide guidance on the use of design tools and methodologies.
- Expert Consultation and Technical Assistance: Serve as a consulting team member or individual consultant, offering specialized expertise in HCD and technical assistance. Provide objective advice and support to project teams, ensuring alignment with project objectives and best practices in design and user experience.
- Documentation and Reporting: Produce and review technical documentation, reports, and presentations that reflect the knowledge and expertise of the SME. Ensure accurate and effective communication of findings, recommendations, and design solutions to colleagues, clients, and government representatives.
- Project Management Support: In the absence of a Project Manager, manage specific components of HCD projects, including coordinating tasks, monitoring progress, and ensuring timely completion. Collaborate with project managers and program managers to align HCD activities with overall project goals.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with stakeholders, including end users, project teams, and government representatives, to understand needs, gather feedback, and ensure the successful implementation of HCD initiatives. Represent the organization in meetings and discussions related to HCD and technical assistance.
- Continuous Improvement and Innovation: Stay updated on the latest trends, tools, and best practices in HCD. Recommend and implement improvements to existing processes and methodologies to enhance the effectiveness and impact of HCD activities.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Extensive knowledge and expertise in human-centered design principles, user research, and design thinking methodologies.
- Proven ability to develop personas, journey maps, and other design artifacts.
- Strong facilitation and presentation skills for conducting workshops and engaging stakeholders.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to develop technical solutions to complex challenges.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for documenting findings and delivering presentations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a high degree of initiative and flexibility.
- Proficient in using design and project management tools and software.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree with 8-10 years of experience, or a Master’s degree with 6-8 years of experience in human-centered design, user experience, technical assistance, or a related field.
- Experience in managing or supporting HCD projects within the context of grant management or public sector programs is highly preferred.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
No direct supervisory responsibilities. However, the Senior SME may provide mentorship and guidance to junior team members and contribute to their development in HCD practices.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment is primarily office-based, involving collaboration with team members and interaction with stakeholders, with occasional offsite meetings and travel as required.
