Summary
The Plumber, Maintenance position at Langley Hospital (Langley Air Force Base) is responsible for the assembly, installation, and repair of pipes, fittings, and fixtures associated with heating, water, and drainage systems. This role ensures that all plumbing work is performed according to strict specifications and relevant plumbing codes. The position is governed by the jurisdiction of the Union, which extends to all plumbing and piping systems including water, gas, heating, steam, and sanitation.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- System Installation & Assembly: Assembles and installs valves, pipefittings, and pipes made of various metals (iron, steel, brass, lead) and nonmetals (glass, vitrified clay, plastic).
- Planning & Preparation: Studies building plans and drawings to determine required tools and the sequence of installation; inspects structures to identify obstructions and prevent structural weakening during installation.
- Layout & Modification: Locates and marks positions for pipe connections and passage holes; cuts openings in walls and floors using hand and power tools to accommodate fittings.
- Pipe Fitting: Cuts and threads pipe using pipe cutters, torches, and threading machines; bends pipe to required angles manually or with bending machines.
- Joining & Sealing: Joins pipes using screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and caulked joints.
- Testing & Maintenance: Fills systems with water or air and utilizes pressure gauges to detect leaks.
- Fixture Repair: Installs and repairs sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, garbage disposals, dishwashers, and water softeners.
- General Upkeep: Maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains.
- Supplemental Tasks: May weld holding fixtures to steel structural members and performs other duties as assigned.
Education
- Licensing: Must possess and maintain current plumber license
- Formal apprenticeship or equivalent training.
Experience
- Technical Knowledge: Demonstrated experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of diverse plumbing and piping systems.
Work Environment
- Location: Primarily on-site at Langley Air Force Base/Hospital in Hampton, VA.
- Provision of Gear: The employer furnishes all necessary tools, equipment, and sufficient work uniforms.
- Security & Health: Employment is contingent upon passing security investigations, suitability screenings, and medical immunizations required by the client to maintain a contractor badge.
